Hi!

Did I break something in my Hubzilla, or is it really impossible to post to a "forum" via ActivityPub (Mastodon)? More precisely, creating a new post doesn't work, but replying to an existing one does.

I tried posting both as a regular "public" message and as "private mentions" - the forum simply ignores these messages.

What kind of "forum" is it? Guppe group? Friendica group? Lemmy community? /kbin or Mbin magazine? PieFed community? nodeBB forum?

Except for Guppe groups, the safest way is usually to look up the forum in your list of connections. If you want to post to a Lemmy community, a /kbin magazine, an Mbin magazine, a PieFed community, a Friendica group, a Hubzilla forum, a (streams) group, a Forte group (once there are any) or a nodeBB forum, you first have to join it (connect to it) and have your membership (connection) approved. You can't just mention them out of the blue.

Now, when you're a member, check whether the point on the profile picture is not red, for red means it won't accept your posts anyway (yet). If it isn't, you can open Recent activity and see what has happened in the forum since you've tried to join. At the top, you'll find a post editor. With this post editor, you can post directly to the forum without mentioning it.

Not using mentions is particularly important if you want to post to a Lemmy community. It isn't that Lemmy is technologically incompatible with mentions. It's more of a cultural case. Lemmy is decentralised Reddit, and it has adopted a whole lot of Reddit culture which includes an even greater amount of xenophobia towards everything else in the Fediverse than Mastodon. On Lemmy, just like on Reddit, mentions are largely unnecessary, and hashtags are entirely useless. So if you use either, you're a weirdo.

This looks like a regression. Possibly mastofon changed their definiton of what a direct message is again. It is kind of a moving target
